작지만 큰 대학 리버럴 아츠 칼리지

미국에는 학부만을 고집하는 작지만 명문으로 꼽히는 대학들이 상당수다. 이들의 중심에는 리버럴 아츠 칼리지(Liberal Arts College)가 있다. 리버럴 아츠 칼리지는 인문학, 사회과학, 자연과학, 어학 등 교양과목에 중점을 둔 학부 중심의 4년제 대학을 말한다. 이들 칼리지는 학부에서 인성을 갈고 닦은 뒤 대학원에 도전할 학생들이 주로 찾는다. 종합대처럼 번잡하지도 않고 교수들과 함께 토론하고 연구하는 학풍이 매력으로 꼽힌다.

리버럴 아츠 칼리지는 재학생수가 대개 1500여명 안팎으로 작은 대학이다. 그렇다고 쉽게 생각해서는 큰 코 다친다. 아이비리그 만큼이나 들어가기 까다로운 대학들이 수두룩하다. 윌리엄스 (MA)와 엠허스트 (MA), 스와스모어 (PA), 포모나 칼리지 (CA), 웰슬리 (MA) 등이 이들. 이들 대학은 SAT 중간 점수가 1350-1530점대에 이르고 합격률이 19%대로 치열하다. 또 학교에 대한 만족도 또한 대단히 높아 졸업률이 95%를 상회한다.

미국에는 현재 215개의 리버럴 아츠 칼리지가 있는데 대부분은 사립이고 이중 22개만이 주립이다. 리버럴 아츠는 교수 1인당 학생수가 19명 안팎으로 적어서 학생과 교수간의 대화가 긴밀하다는 장점이 있다. 또 어느 특정 분야의 지식을 배우는게 아니라 일반적이고 포괄적인 학문을 배우기 때문에 학부생들로 하여금 세상을 보는 안목을 키워준다.

리버럴 아츠 칼리지 학생들은 졸업 후 대개 로스쿨이나 경영대학원 혹은 의과대학원 등 전문분야로 진출한다. 특히 의과대학들은 종전에는 과학 과목을 중심으로 지망자를 뽑았지만 요즘에는 과학 과목 외 많은 리버럴 아츠 과목을 택할 것을 권고, 리버럴 아츠 학생들의 선택폭이 넓어지고 있다. 이는 인문과학이나 사회과학을 통해 길러진 인성이 환자를 대할 때 중요하다고 간주되기 때문이다. US뉴스 & 월드리포트지가 선정한 2008학년도 최우수 리버럴 아츠 칼리지 중심으로 간략히 소개한다.
